Gypsy Caravan

Gypsy Caravan became a favourite go to during summer for myself and my bestie. We were drawn there by the now infamous frozé. It is without a doubt the best summer drink if you enjoy a good rosé and to be honest even in winter I still want it.

It is located in Ponsonby down a lane behind Golden Dawn, it is also where Miss Mooshines is.

One day while scrolling through instagram I saw a post about flaming cheese and the rest was history, it was something I HAD to try. Basically they bring out a skillet and pour ouzo over which is an anise-flavoured aperitif and then set it alight. It really is fun and it tastes unbelievable.

During the week of the Gin Jubilee in Auckland Gypsy Caravan also did a weekend of frozen gin and tonics. Unfortunately I missed out of these but instead got to try gin infused with hibiscus.

It is best to head to Gypsy Caravan when it is sunny as the majority of their seating is outside. The decor is really beautiful with eccentric patterned pillows and dream catchers overhead. There is also actually a caravan.

Franc’s

You will find Franc’s Bar and Cafe in Takapuna on the beach side of Hurstmere Road. Franc’s is where I got to finally try for my first time chicken and waffles and I was not disappointed.

The most exciting thing about this meal was that the crispy fried chicken was coated in dorritos. As a side the poutine is pretty on point as well which you can add pulled pork if you wish.

Franc’s itself has a decent vibe with views of Takapuna beach and in summer their frozé is the greatest idea, honestly I would drink this all the time but it is not always available.

Price wise it’s not too bad for example we ordered:

  • The house cocktail
  • Jelly-tip hardshake
  • Poutine
  • Pork Belly
  • Chicken and waffles

The total was around $80 for two people.

If you like American style food that are decent portions sizes, a good selection of cocktails or craft beer, and friendly staff then I would give Franc’s a go.
